The Best Gear for Catching Striped Bass in the Hudson River

This is the gear that I use. All-in budget is about $300. If you already have any of the below, use that even if it is not the exact recommended type or size. Do not let that stop you from getting out there and trying. I have caught striped bass on 4 foot kids rods and 9 foot heavy rods. These are the recommendations if you are starting from scratch but many setups can be effective just get out there.

• Rod: 7’–8’ medium or heavy spinning rod

• Reel: 4000–5000 size spinning reel (saltwater rated)

• Main line: 30–50 lb braided line

• Fish finder rig (6-pack)

• High-Low rig (5-pack) - for catching bait and smaller fish

• Scissors

• Drop net - critical for landing large fish. This one is metal and is very sturdy which I would strongly recommend over some of the lighter plastic ones

• Fishing bells - extremely helpful if you’re using more than one rod

• Bank Sinkers: 1–5 oz, 8 oz - for when current is strong

• Pliers
